In this issue, learn how AlarisPro is positioned to provide a critical support role during the BVLOS application process and with ongoing compliance after a waiver is approved. Early in 2024, our team conducted a deep dive of the available documentation and indicators within the UAS industry to estimate the structure of the final BVLOS requirements. The resources we evaluated included the March 2022 BVLOS report from the Aviation Rulemaking Committee (ARC), requirements in 2024 approved BVLOS waivers, EASA certification requirements, discussions with customers, and interviews with certification officials and other industry leaders. The results were clear – formal risk assessments and more broadly Safety Management Systems (SMS) will be required by Part 108 and other rulemaking bodies. It makes sense since the manned aviation community has proven the benefits of this structured approach to safety which helps to proactively identify, assess, and mitigate risks which leads to a reduction in accidents and incidents and improved efficiency. With this conclusion in hand, we quickly started interviews with customers and safety experts to create the software requirements for the AlarisPro SMS module. We conducted over thirty interviews, demos and other discussions to finalize our approach. We want to thank all those that contributed and are proud to announce that the new SMS module was released this month and we’re already receiving accolades for the end product. Customers with the Flight Risk Assessment Tool (FRAT) included on their subscription will now also have access to the SMS module. In further support of BVLOS, our experienced team recognized that a Safety Management System (SMS) would be a key component in compliance. Early in 2024, our team began interviewing key UAS industry leaders to help us shape how our SMS module would present and be utilized. One thing we learned was that our customers wanted the SMS documentation to be wholly integrated and leverage existing features in AlarisPro.
The new AlarisPro SMS is a game-changing tool for the industry and an enabler for BVLOS operations. We kept it simple and affordable (a third of the cost of other standalone SMS tools) yet powerful and compliant with aviation SMS standards and best practices. It is fully integrated with operations and maintenance and we are working with our customers to determine how to best integrate Safety Performance Indicators (SPIs) on a future update to the SMS module.
